Wanna know a secret?
My best friend and little sister, Shelbie Jae Shill, is a poet.
Wanna know how I know?
Last October, a couple friends and I were brainstorming ideas of how I should ask Taylor to Preference. I wanted to incorporate stars, because star gazing is kind of “our thing.” Shelb, kind of jokingly but kind of not, said, “I’ll write you a sonnet that you can give to him!” We kind of laughed it off..until the next day at lunch when Shelbie handed me a sheet of notebook paper with her to die for handwriting on it. Written on the paper was a sonnet. Here is what it said..
Star Sonnet
Shelbie Jae Shill
The smiling night comes out to play it’s song,
A romance of nights sweet serenity
Plays through our minds and now we find no wrong
In stars which hold the night so pleasantly.
The stars are the haven I’ve found so dear:
Soft, sparkling diamonds spewed across the sky
Light up our eyes in a world full of fear,
But a world full of love, looking on high.
Night is a blanket, covering the earth:
And stars but a glitter, whispering fate.
They shine amongst all, a beacon of mirth,
And listening close, the whispers create
A sound so melodic, on this starred night
When everything fits, and everything’s right.
Did I cry when I read that? Yes. Tears. On my face. Shelbie, you have a gift. You really do. You are an incredibly talented writer, thank you for sharing this with me.
I love you forever, Shmelb.
Love, Abigail
